Alternatively Zemzem, Zem-zem, Zamzam, Zam-zam, and Zam Zam.
The sacred well near the Kaaba at Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, used for no other purpose than drinking and religious ablution.
Probably the most celebrated well in the world, to all Mohammedans the Zem Zem well is an object of especial veneration. However, among Europeans the well has the reputation of having been the means to disseminating more than one outbreak of cholera.
According to Arab tradition, this is the very well that was shown to Hagar when Ismael was perishing of thirst. Various derivations of the name Zem Zem have been given, and according to some it is a word formed in imitation of the splashing of its waters. Others attribute its origin to "Zam! zam!" ("Fill! fill!"), Hagar's exclamation at the well.
The water of the sacred well of Zem Zem is not only drunk in Mecca, but is exported to all parts of the world for the use of the faithful, and a great trade is done in the sale of bottles and vessels to the pilgrims.
Muslims consider the Zem Zem well a modern miracle, never going dry regardless of the millions of gallons of water consumed every year.
