Bogy
Alternatively Bogey and Bogie; pl Bogeys and Bogies.
In Britannic folklore, the name given to a malicious spirit or hobgoblin. They are often confused with its many closely related legendary creatures, such as the better known Boggart.
The term Bogy or Bogey may derive from the Slavonic bog (god). Other forms of the name of this ancient sprite, specter, or goblin are Bug-a-boo, Boo (Yorkshire), Bogle (Scotland), Boggle, Boll, Bo-man, Bogill (Scotland), and Bock. Bullbeggar is probably a form of Bu and Bogey allied to Boll (Northern England), an apparition.
Bogeys are legendary creatures with a fierce temper, reputed to live for the simple purpose of torturing young children that disobey their mothers, or of punishing those that are lazy, lack self-restraint, or are guilty of crimes. Consequently, many parents use them to frighten their kids into agreeable behavior.
In addition, Bogeys are said to take great pleasure in irritating humans until they go nuts. When a person hears a voice around a corner, only to find that nothing is there, it is the Bogey at work. Another way this mischievous creature may annoy humans is to — after entering someone's house — create a huge mess, make weird noises, or cause small incidents that, for some reason, always happen at very inopportune occasions.
Bogey is also an alternative name for the Owner-of-Bag, a monstrous bird in the traditions and folklore of the Arapaho Native American people. Curiously, this fabulous bird — a gigantic owl that has a vast bag in which to abduct small kids who constantly misbehave — is frequently used by parents to threaten their children into good behavior.
