Book of Kells
One of the finest extant illuminated manuscripts of the four Gospels in Latin, and considered to be one of the masterpieces of Western ancient art. It is known for the extraordinary array of pictures, interlaced shapes and ornamental details.
A 13th-century scholar, Giraldus Cambrensis, writes of the Book of Kells:
"... you might believe it was the work of an angel rather than a human being."
A fascinating link between the ancient Druidic culture and the medieval world, the Book of Kells blends both in a way that is still visually compelling today. The strange imagination displayed in the pages, the impeccable technique and the very fine state of preservation make The Book of Kells an object of endless fascination.
The Book of Kells is believed to have been initiated by Irish monks at the monastery scriptorium of Iona, off the Scottish coast, about 1200 years ago. It was completed years later at Kells in Ireland, where it was held until 1661. It is now preserved in the Library of Trinity College, in Dublin, Ireland.
