| | | Bruno, Giordano (1548-1600)
Italian martyr, mystic, philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician, born in Nola, Italy.
Ordained a Dominican priest in 1572, Giordano Bruno defied theories of the day by teaching that universe was infinite. For that he was to be tried for heresy but fled to Rome (1576) and Geneva (1578), where he was excommunicated.
Giordano Bruno was finally allowed to teach in Paris (1581); also taught in England and Germany; wrote three books on theory of universe and three on ethics.
Upon his return to Italy in 1591 he was denounced to the Inquisition; after a 7-year trial in Rome he was burned at the stake by order of Pope Clement VIII on Feb. 17, 1600.
Giordano Bruno's life and death has perhaps caused his image to stand out more strongly in the minds of his countrymen than that of other of their leaders of thought. A movement of popular enthusiasm began in 1876, resulting in the unveiling of his statue in Rome, in the Campo dei Fiori, the place on which Bruno was burned.
Giordano Bruno contributed both to the development of modern science and to the revival of Neo-Platonic magic in the Renaissance. He is claimed by rationalist humanists and by occultists alike as an ancestor.
