Christ, Jesus
The anointed king or Messiah of Jewish prophecy, sometimes conceived of as a military leader who would conquer the Jews oppressors, sometimes held to be a supernatural being sent by God to destroy and recreate the earth, purging it of evil.
Jesus was born at Bethlehem, between 8 and 4 BC (near the end of Herod the Great's reign), and was crucified about 29 AD. As a child, He lived in Nazareth; as a young man, He followed the carpenter's trade.
Jesus lifetime was a period of distress in Palestine, which was under the rule of Herod's three sons and oppressive Roman procurators.
After being baptized by John the Baptist, Jesus gathered twelve disciples and started preaching in Galilee; He was received with enthusiasm by common people because of His charismatic personality, extraordinary healing powers, effective teaching by parables, and impression of authority; He was strongly opposed by the Pharisees and the privileged classes because of His attacks on hypocrisy and interest in the poor and less fortunate.
The fact that Jesus was regarded by some as a long-expected Messiah made the local rulers suspect revolutionary aims. Shortly after an incident at the Jerusalem Temple (drove out money changers) that arouse hostility from the priestly class, He was seized by Roman soldiers and condemned as a blasphemer, deserving death.
After a being sent to Roman procurator Pontius Pilate, and by him to Herod Antipas (ruler of Galilee), who sent Him back to Pilate, Jesus was turned over to the Jewish authorities, who had already decided to get rid of Him.
Jesus was crucified between two thieves on Golgotha and was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea; believed by His followers to have risen from the dead and ascended to heaven.
