From the Latin 'annus climactericus', an ancient belief that certain years in the course of life are more liable to danger or change than others. Also, a critical period in a person's life where major changes in health or fortune are thought to take place.


The most important of the climacterics are the septenary years — 7, 14, 21, 28, etc. — which are associated with lunar periodicities linked by such occultists as Madame Helena P. Blavatsky and Rudolf Steiner with the soul's growth.
