| | | Don Quixote de la Mancha
Also spelled Don Quijote.
Fictitious character, created by the Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes, who is a poor gentleman of La Mancha, the bare and monotonous plateau of central Spain. He read so many of the exaggerated romances of chivalry of his day that he finally believed them to be true.
One day he set forth himself as a knight-errant on his old horse, Rosinante. A shrewd, good-natured peasant of his village, Sancho Panza, went with him as his squire.
Don Quixote regarded everything he saw as extraordinary. Inns were castles and windmills were giants.
The word "quixotic," meaning impractical and idealistic, and the phrase "tilting at a windmill," meaning to fight against an imaginary difficulty, have become part of our language through 'Don Quixote'.
The book was published in 1605, when Cervantes was 57. Despite its huge success, he received little money because of widespread pirating. While the fame of 'Don Quixote' spread through Europe, Cervantes lived in poverty, dependent upon rich patrons. He published the second part of 'Don Quixote' in 1615 and died the following year.
