Jasper
Mystical stone which allegedly prevents fever and dropsy, strengthens the brain, and promotes eloquence; it is a preservative against defluxions, the nightmare, and epilepsy, and is often met with in the east as a counter-charm.
The Jasper is an opaque and fine grained variety of Chalcedony. It is found in all colors including: red, brown, pink, yellow, green, grey/white and shades of blue and purple.
The Jasper stone has been used as Talismans and protective Amulets for thousands of years. Roman athletes used it to protect themselves from injury. Saint Ephiphanius, the 4th century Cypriot bishop, claimed Jasper drove away poisonous snakes and evil spirits.
The Jasper stone has always been used as an amulet of health. Marbodaeus (also Marbodius) mentions seventeen species of the Jasper stone, but that "like the emerald" is most noted for its magical virtues. If modern mystics are to be believed, jasper still serves as a multipurpose remedy; it soothes the stomach and nerves, it works on kidneys, liver and gall bladder; it improves the sense of smell. The Jasper, as mentioned above, was also believed to drive away evil spirits and protect against snake and spider bites.
The Jasper is one of the birth stones listed for the Sun Sign of Virgo. It is also the Mystical birthstone for the month of October.
Modern crystal healers and occultists use different colored Jaspers for a multitude of purposes. Red Jasper eliminates anxiety and stress; yellow Jasper provides protection on a journey; green Jasper increases confidence and opens the heart chakra, and all Jaspers are considered beneficial in depression prevention after a family bereavement.
