In astronomy, the fourth planet from the Sun — sometimes called the "Red Planet".
Named after the Roman god of war, Mars is the seventh largest planet in our system, known since prehistoric times and considered the most favorable place in the Solar System — other than Earth, of course — for human habitation. Mars is a favorite of science fiction writers.
Much smaller than Earth, Mars's surface area is about the same as the land surface area of our planet. Olympus Mons, the highest known mountain within the Solar System, and Valles Marineris, the largest canyon, are both located in the red planet. The controversial "face" on Mars is located in the Cydonia Mensae region at roughly 40.9 degrees North latitude and 9.45 degrees West longitude.
