Oinomancy
Alternatively known as Oenomancy.
A form of augury which in this case is divination by wine, usually that had been poured out as an offering to the gods.
This divination system is very ancient and there are various methods of performing it, such as:
— by the patterns left by spilled wine in a cloth or paper.
— by the appearance of cloth or paper that have been soaked and/or boiled in wine.
— by the appearance of wine poured in libation.
— by the sediment in a glass or bottle of wine.
— by the sediment in the lees, dregs and casks of wine.
— by the color and peculiarities of wine.
— by the wine's taste. In an alternate method of Oinomancy, similar to water gazing, the Oinomancer poured wine into a clear glass, after placing a lit candle behind it. Sitting before the glass the diviner asked the questions and then gazed into it, searching for symbols that might appear in the liquid reflections, and by their interpretation, determine the answers.
In ancient Greece, wine became a favored substance for divination due to its association with Dionysus, who bestowed foresight and inspiration. In a specific divination procedure called 'kottabos', a cup or glass of wine was tossed back and forth between people in a game-like fashion. When the wine spilled, the resulting patterns were interpreted similarly to a inkblot.
In ancient Rome, Oenomancy was carried out by a special priestess known as Bacchante, and was ruled by the god of wine, Bacchus.
