Pyramids
The remains of four-sided stone structures of ancient Egypt and of the pre-Columbian cultures of Central America and Mexico used as ceremonial structures and as burial chambers. Also, a structure where the outer surfaces are triangular and converge at a point. Pyramid bases can be trilateral, quadrilateral, or any polygon shape.
Who built the pyramids of antiquity? For what purpose? Clearly, the ones in Egypt were meant as tombs for the mighty Pharaohs, but was that all? From where did the unknown builders acquire the extraordinarily advanced scientific and astronomical knowledge used to design these magnificent and mammoth structures? There are about eighty pyramids known today from ancient Egypt.
Lesser known pyramids in other areas of the world and the pyramids of Egypt have, over the centuries, provided archaeologists, historians and mystics with material for thousands of volumes, numberless theories, endless debates, and inner meditations. There are pyramids in Greece, Indonesia, India, North America, Mesoamerica, China, Japan; even the Romans built pyramids.
Today, the mysteries still continue to intrigue and plague scholars, scientists, and all those forever searching for the answers to these questions. And new pyramids continue to be discovered all over the world. In China, previously unknown pyramids were discovered quite recently (see Chinese Pyramids). In 1997, a ziggurat (step pyramid) was found submerged in the sea off the coast of the Japanese island of Yonaguni-Jima, an island located in the Pacific ocean between Okinawa and Taiwan (see Japanese Pyramids). The rectangular edifice is very big (600-ft wide by 90-ft high) and very old (10 to 12 thousand years old). Professor Masaki Kimura of Ryukyu University in Okinawa said of the amazing discovery:
"This could be evidence of a new culture as there are no records of a people intelligent enough to have built such a monument 10,000 years ago."
In occult lore pyramids were also used for initiation in the Mysteries, for calendric and astronomical purposes, and as repositories or transformers of spiritual energy. It is alleged that the polyhedral geometry of the pyramid generates supernatural powers. In 1959 a Czech radio engineer, Karl Drbal, claimed that razor blades placed in the cavity of a pyramid modeled on the dimensions of the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) at Gizeh (Giza) in Egypt would be mysteriously sharpened within 24 hours. Soon afterwards people were advancing the efficacy of pyramids for nurturing plants, healing wounds, curing headaches and aiding meditation.
