Witch of Endor
In the Bible, in book I Samuel 28, the witch of Endor was said to have called up the ghost of the prophet Samuel (or a demon impersonating him) at the command of King Saul. The ghost angrily predicted Saul's downfall.
The original story was written about 1000 BC, and it is considered one of the strangest episodes recorded in the Word of God, since King Saul's had ostensibly cleansed the land of Israel from all occult practices.
The story goes that at that time Israel was under the threat of a Philistine invasion, and having consulted God on the matter and gotten no answer, King Saul — gripped with fear of an invasion and informed by his servants that at Endor, between Mount Tabor and the Hill of Moreh, there lived a medium who had escaped his previous purges — decided to consult the witch.
The Old Testament law forbade occult practices of any kind and called for the death penalty on any who would consult mediums. Fearing the punishment him himself had ratified, King Saul disguised himself and traveled under the cover of darkness to Endor to consult the witch. Assuring her that she would not be punished for practicing her forbidden profession, he requested that she bring up the prophet Samuel from the dead.
The witch followed Saul's instructions, but rather than using the tricks of her trade to deceive Saul, she herself was shocked to see an old man appear, whom Saul identified as Samuel!.
Samuel proceeded to remind King Saul that the kingdom had been taken from him because of his disobedience in the Amalekite war, and then foresaw Israel's defeat and the deaths of Saul and his sons at the hands of the Philistines.
