X
Unimaginative name given by Jacqueline Roumeguere-Eberhardt to the African man-beast (hominids, man-like creatures) in 1978, when she made in-depth research on the subject, collecting 33 accounts of sightings in 11 different Kenyan forests.
One Kenyan witness described being kept prisoner by an "X" for more than an hour:
"His eyes, his mouth were those of a man, and his face was not covered with hair, but his forehead was very low, rather like that of a baboon."
Another "X" was seen by 16 adults and two children who described him as "whitish" in color, naked, of medium to large size and strongly built.
The discovery of "X" was greeted with skepticism by Richard Leakey, the director of the Kenya National Museum, who dismissed the stories as typical of persistent myths about mysterious forest-dwellers.
Before her death in 2006, Jacqueline Roumeguere-Eberhardt was able to identify 4 separate types of "X".
Though the elusive "X" provided Jacqueline Roumeguere-Eberhardt with the basis for a book, The Unidentified Hominids of the African Forest (1984), she was unable to fulfill her ambition to lead an expedition to find them.
