Adjuration
An urgent demand or command made upon another to do something, or to abstain from doing something, rendered more solemn and more appealing by coupling with it the name of God or of some sacred person or thing.
Derived from the Latin word adjuro, meaning to swear, in occultism it is a formula used for conjuring or exorcising evil spirits, by which the demon or spirit is commanded, in the name of the Christian God, to do or say what the magician or exorcist demands and/or requires. To adjure is to charge someone to do something as though on oath.
According to Saint Thomas Aquinas, during the course of this life demons are our adversaries and their actions are not subject to our disposal but that of God and the holy angels. Augustine said "the rebel spirit is ruled by the just spirit." Accordingly we may repulse the demons, as being our enemies, by adjuring them through the power of God's name, lest they do us harm of soul or body, in accord with the Divine power given by Christ, as recorded by Luke (10:19):
"Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
In adjuring a demon one may bid him to depart or to desist from doing something in the name of the Lord. Indeed, when used under due conditions, that is "in truth, in justice, and in judgment", adjuration is a positive act of religion, for it presupposes on the part of the speaker faith in God.
Necromancers adjure and invoke the demons in order to learn or obtain something from them. This is considered unlawful by the Church, which sees an adjuration as a friendly appeal and not an authoritative way of compulsion. Accordingly, an adjuration should be a way to repulse demons, and not to ask for their help and, by doing so, promote fellowship with them.
