Holistic Medicine
Term used to describe therapies that attempt to treat the patient as a whole person.
This is allegedly accomplished through the use of noninvasive techniques, such as meditation, prayer, herbs, vitamins, minerals and exotic diets.
Proponents of Holistic Medicine describe it as a system of health care which fosters a cooperative relationship among all those involved, leading towards optimal attainment of the physical, mental emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health. Holistic Medicine looks at an individual’s overall physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being before recommending any treatments.
In the Holistic viewpoint, the body’s systems are seen as interdependent parts of the person’s whole being. The body’s natural state is one of health, and an illness or disease is an imbalance in the body’s systems.
Very popular in Europe, specially Great Britain, Holistic health and medical practices are rapidly gaining acceptance in the United States.
